Brace Yourself

State Park Challenge #9: Aztalan State Park (10.14.17)

Today we celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary AND visited a new state park as part of our challenge.  Aztalan is not a big state park, and it is not far from Sun Prairie (it is near Lake Mills).  However, it proved to be the perfect rainy-day destination for today.

Our visit was brief; we meandered among the three mounds for 40 minutes, and looked (very diligently) for THE PERFECT spot to walk down to the Crawfish River. The river access was necessary because the two girls were insistent that we throw the "big leaves" into the water.  The slope was steep, and the ground wet, so this actually made mom and dad more nervous than was necessary.

We had no idea that there Native American mounds so near to our hometown!  The site dates from approximately 1200 AD.  It was very interesting; peaceful.  Until it started pouring rain and then we retreated to the School Grounds coffee shop in Cottage Grove (another 'bucket list' destination).  Overall we had a lovely late morning/early afternoon.
