Pandemic Hiking. It's a thing. And we found out exactly how popular today when we went, midweek, to Devil's Lake to explore. We finally had a warmer day, and thought a little outdoor time would perk up our dispositions. It turns out, pandemic hiking IS wonderful, but stressful.
Our first route was straight up, as we worked our way up the Balanced Rock Trail. The trail itself is less than half a mile, but straight up climbing is a little harder than we are used to, especially on a crowded trail. We turned back a bit before the top, as the narrow, crowded trail was too much for Melissa and Jon. (Sorry Madeline. People! SOCIAL DISTANCING!)
We meandered a bit by the lake, before deciding to visit nearby Parfrey's Glen. It has a 'mythical' following and we could see how enchanting this 0.7 trail would be with leaves on the trees. We ultimately turned back at the end of the formal trail, forgoing the waterfall, because we were not properly equipped to cross the stream. (Sorry Madeline and Morgen!) We WILL be back.
So overall, not much hiking in terms of distance. However, we did get outside, which was needed. And we will be back, because this gem is practically in our backyard. What took us so long to visit?
