State Park Challenge #41: Copper Culture State Park (07.18.20)
With COVID-19 and tick season upon us, it's been a while since we hit the trail. Today we ventured to Oconto to check out this tiny park. We were actually surprised - it was THAT tiny! There was a historic museum dedicated to discussing the excavations that were done on the Native American mounds in the area in the 1950's; the teenager supervising the museum basically slept through our socially-distanced visit. We took a break for lunch, and then headed down to the Oconto River - bugs were an issue but another kind visitor from West Allis warned us and gave us bug spray. The trail to the river was almost not a trail, so we took the girls along the Bluebird trail to get a few steps in. Overall, we were confused because we did not see any mounds; assuming they have been dug up for study, I suppose there was a historical marker instead. Of interest was the BEE HIVE sign that warned visitors around a tree along the main path. We did learn a lot about copper mining and molding in the area, and it was a nice warm-up for our 2020 camping adventure.
