Brace Yourself

Lets face it, we're not professional writers. In fact, I will do my best to keep the spelling errors to a minimum. The following are random thoughts as we reflect on life and our beautiful family. Hope family and friends enjoy!

State Park Challenge #68: Rock Island State Park (8.19.2023)

What a finale! Our family ferried (twice!) to Rock Island and hiked our final mileage to tour the Rock Island lighthouse, and climb down (then up) to dip our toes in Lake Michigan. The whole adventure was just epic; there are no appropriate descriptions. Melissa was the only one to see a snake! Which was good, and disappointing, depending on which Meyer Family adventurer you might be. (Madeline does snakes!)

After 6 years of WI traveling, it's hard to imagine that this park was our final in the challenge. Morgen already pointed out that the "new since our brochure" parks could be bonus challenge events. They just might have to be!

Thank you, family, for an amazing journey. Congratulations! We did it!

State Park Challenge #67A: Cave Point (A county park inside of Whitefish Dunes State Park (8.18.2023))

We managed to get a head start on our final state park challenge, and found ourselves with an hour to spend at Cave Point. This is a spot well known in Door County, and we've passed signs for it with every trip we've taken to the area. After winding through Whitefish Dunes State Park, we were able to watch a few cliff jumpers take the leap into the lake in the cave-like, cove area. Then we climbed over some rocks ourselves to take the opportunity to wade in the water. It was a great way to start the weekend!

State Park Challenge #67: Whitefish Dunes State Park (8.06.2022)

We had an amazing family overnight trip, enjoying a Friday Family Night with the Green Bay Packers and enjoying a few hours on Saturday on the beach at Whitefish Dunes State Park. The weather was perfect and the sand was remarkable. We had a picnic, I finished reading a book, and the girls enjoyed being washed over by Lake Michigan's waves. Instead of our normal hiking, we decided to just soak it in at this one and it was the absolute right choice!

I can't believe we've made it so close to the end of the challenge! Our last park requires quite a journey and so it will likely take us into 2023 before we have time to complete the final challenge. But this is ok! We've certainly enjoyed experiencing our state and continue to dream about and plan adventures.

State Park Challenge #66: Heritage Hill State Park (5.14.2022)

This park visit was literally like no other. Heritage Hill is a historical park, featuring a path of historical buildings demonstrative of early European settlement in Wisconsin. Our particular favorite buildings included the gazebo, the firehouse, the print shop, the courthouse, and the school building (of course). Unfortunately Morgen experienced a sudden onset of some sort of illness and (although we didn't quite believe her until later), she wasn't able to enjoy the beautiful day the same way as the rest of us. Madeline did think the history was enjoyable. We can hardly believe we have only 2 more destinations to go...!

State Park Challenge #65: Lakeshore State Park (5.7.2022)

We enjoyed the most beautiful weather as we walked the 1.25 mile loop at Lakeshore State Park, along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. The trail was paved and we joined lots of people meandering around the spot. This is one of the smallest parks in states but the impact is huge! We parked in a structure and walked across the bridge of the Milwaukee Art Museum in order to link up to the park/trail. Now only 3 more to go....!

State Park Challenge #64: Peshtigo River State Forest (2.26.2022)

Our final destination took us waaaay out into the country. This area is advertised as a fly fishing mecca of sorts, which we knew we wouldn't be taking advantage of, even in the summer. So we decided to enjoy the Seymour trail, which was dedicated to hiking/snowshoeing (as another trail system was groomed for skiing). Upon entering the area, we noted that there were no tracks, which also confirms our observation that we were really, really in a remote area. We followed a trail of sorts, into a Y pattern (named Meyer Trail, by us). That trek lasted only a 1/4 mile, and so we tried forging another route where we had seen a fence blocking access. As there was no signage or footprints for us to follow, it was hard: 8 inches of snow! and kind of eerie. We truly made the best of it, but conceded that the area is best suited for people on the water or on snowmobiles. Which only meant it was time to go back to the resort and enjoy the pool. Thank you family for adventuring literally into the unknown every time!

State Park Challenge #63: Governor Thompson State Park (2.26.2022)

Our second stop of the day was Governor Thompson State Park. The enterance was shared with the adjacent State Forest, and we headed straight for Wood Lake. This area of the park is groomed for cross country skiing, and also had some snowshoe opportunities. However, our inital plan was to take advantage of the "sledding hill" described online and at the trailhead. We are still confused as to what exactly constituted the "sledding hill". We had really hoped to surprise the girls with sledding, and even bought a battery pump to take advantage of our inflatable tubes. Alas, the girls rode the slope from the parking area onto the iced-over lake a few times. It was not as imagined! And so....we made due and moved on to the last Challenge spot for the weekend...

State Park Challenge #62: Menominee River State Recreation Area (2.26.2022)

A long weekend, (meaning no school on Friday), gave our family an opportunity for our family to seek out our Challenge in Northeastern Wisconsin. So we set out to visit the Four Seasons Resort, in Pembine, WI. Our first state challenge visit was at Menominee River State Recreation Area. Remote would have been an understatement - but wait until I describe our 3rd spot of the weekend! This area is best known for its river shoreline (as titled), but as we are not paddlers or a fish'er family, we looked for the hiking rails near Pemene Falls. Unfortunately, we drove the WI enterance to be stopped in our tracks (literally!) as the "logging road" was unplowed and not a great choice for our Honda. We instead drove to the Michigan trail, and walked 1/2 mile down to the falls; the falls were iced over! It was cold, and we had some frustration to start out our day. But we kept going to....

State Park Challenge #61: Havenwoods State Forest (12.30.2021)

We seem to have fallen into a wonderful habit of ending or beginning the new year with a hike. Today we took the opportunity to have a family date day, complete with our New Year hike. We started off with a visit with Oma Resi and Opa Franz, and ended it with a drive through the Magic of Lights at American Family Field. In between, we walked a little over a mile and a half through the trails. It was as described: serene, with sirens occasionally heard in the distance! We saw 4 deer, which were very large bucks, and one was staring right at us (we missed a picture though). We also learned a bit aabout the Lincoln Creek that flows through the area, ultimately to Lake Michigan. We had an amazing day. Cheers to our next adventures, in 2022!

State Park Challenge #60: Pattison State Park (09.05.2021)

Pattison State Park was our second park of the day, but it sure did not disappoint. We were able to see both Big and Little Manitou Falls, and hike down to the Black River; the river was likely the girls favorite part of the visit, as they got to criss cross it over the rocks that lined the river bed. It was a peaceful rest at the bottom of the ravine for Jon and I, before the climb back up the hill. Of note, by this point in the weekend the girls were professional license plate spotters, and we may have driven multiple circles in the parking lot to confirm plate-sightings. Although this was our last state park of the trip, Duluth offered us a chance to still visit a lighthouse (and splash IN Lake Superior), and view a cargo ship come into port and under the Aerial Lift Bridge. Fantastic Fun.

State Park Challenge #59: Amnicon Falls State Park (09.05.2021)

Amnicon Falls State Park is the definition of "gem". If I had a dollar for everytime Jon told me it was a gem while visiting the park we could go on another vacation! But it truly was just wonderful. The girls had a wonderful time jumping among the rocks like sprites. That may have increased parental blood pressure during the visit, but it really was just a wonderful place to wander and explore. The waterfalls were gorgeous. And in this park "off the beaten path" was the path, and so it extra adventureous to take it all in. Of note was the very low water level. We did see one set of "falls" that was dried up except for some dripping the girls found once they crossed the bottom of the ravine. After a donut snack at this park, we were ready for the next...

State Park Challenge #58: Governor Knowles State Forest (09.04.2021)

We set out for a Meyer State Park Challenge weekend and it was one of our best trips. Ever. We started witha  stop at Governor Knowles State Forest. We did the Ravine and River trails on the Brandt Pines Trail system, which was misleading; we saw very little of the river. The trail itself would have been gorgeous, except our focus was on avoiding the incredible amount of cross-path spiders along the way. SPIDERS EVERYWHERE! But now we have a story about spiders of course. Afterwards we stopped at a local creamery for ice cream before heading to Duluth.

State Park Challenge #57: Kinnickinnic State Park (08.20.2021)

Before returning home, we also stopped at Kinnickinic State Park. Honestly there was a period of time where this effort was potentially a no-go, due to construction between our hotel in Prescott and the park. But Jon got directions at our morning coffee stop and we were able to take in 2 miles of trails that wove through the park, along the St. Croix River, and the prairire. We've learned a lot about prairie and the ecosystem as part of the state-park challenge and it sure does inspire us to plant more and plant native. This hike was a great way to start our morning and end a wonderful family trip.

State Park Challenge #56: Willow River State Park (08.19.2021)

We decided to finish up our 2021 family vacation with trips to two state parks right near the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota. After a long drive across Minnesota, we stopped at Willow River State Park. In a mom-fail, I forgot that this was THE waterfall park I had seen and we should have brought swim suits to the falls. The falls were, simply, majestic. Multi-level falls provided opportunity to swim, cooling off from the crazy heat-humidity that comes with a Wisconsin August. Thankfully our girls are able to adapt, and so we waded in our clothes to take in the views and cool our feet. Morgen decided we needed to climb many, many stairs to take in a view over the falls, and it was awesome. This park is rated as "would return with swim suit".

State Park Challenge #55: Harrington Beach State Park (08.07.2021)

This was Meyer-Cooper Family Camping weekend and it was a ...BUST. Weather does seem to prevail when we plan any kind of tent camping event. We forewent the trip on Friday night in hopes that Saturday would bring at least cloudy skies instead of rain, but instead the radar loomed and so our overnight plans were thwarted.

Instead, in Meyer fashion, we made the 'best of' and managed a 5 hour camp trip! We set up the canopy, and a lawn game; we walked to the beach, and back, and enjoyed an abbreviated camp fire to cook s'mores and grilled cheese. Then we packed up and drove home.

It was for the best; we encountered tornado warnings in Columbia county and snuck in the house just before a major storm rolled through Sun Prairie. We saw that storm pass over our campsite 202 right at bedtime. Instead of being confined to our tent for a dozen hours in the rain, we slept soundly in our beds.

It was a good effort family - and one to remember!

State Park Challenge #54: Fischer Creek Recreation Area (07.05.2021)

Before heading home from Point Beach, we did take the opportunity to swing by Cedar Creek Ice Cream factory/shoppe, and it was a good thing we did. This is because our second stop, at Fischer Creek, was the first place we all decided that we definitely do not need to return to, even for a lunch or leg stretch break.  The spot is essentially a driveway with a view, and the beach access was not as gorgeous as Point Beach, but was rocky and had lots of algae (so now taking a quick dip to cool off in the heat.) There were a lot of smooth rocks to try and skip, and ironically a great photo opportunity with a tree branch. Other than that, bust. However we cannot complain after such an amazing day.

P.S. Jon was able to see the Point Beach Solar Farm. This made him happy.

State Park Challenge #53: Point Beach State Forest (07.05.2021)

Happy Summer! We took advantage of our corporate holiday and made a trip across the state to Point Beach State Forest. The day was hot. Scalding. Over 90 degrees! So rather than focus on getting our hike on, we opted to enjoy the beach shoreline during our visit. Lake Michigan was cold! But the sand was too hot to stand on - so it worked out. Madeline "caught" a lot of dead fish....which initially freaked Morgen out, but then she assumed the duty of spotter.

Before we left we had a chance to stop by and see Rawley Light House - we could only do a walk by, and get a selfie, but it was still a good chance to see how expansive the beach really is in this area of the state. The girls were thrilled for the beach time too.

State Park Challenge #52: Interstate State Park (03.22.2021)

Our final park visit of the trip brought us to Interstate State Park, which is bordered by the St. Croix River (with views of Minnesota's park across the river.) The western terminus of the Ice Age Trail is located on the Pothole Trail in this state park; this trail was by far the favorite of the Meyer Ladies! Who knew that these bluffs were once the bottom of the river and that whirlpools could drill huge holes in the rock! (Geology lesson!)  We also took time to walk the Echo Canyon trail also, which felt like a little like walking through a fairy tale scene!  The girls wrapped up our visit by rock hunting for a bit along the Dalles Lake. Spring Break 2021 was a success!

State Park Challenge #51: Straight Lake State Park (03.22.2021)

After our stay in Bayfield we decided to detour and extend the trip by driving west. We stopped at Straight Lake State Park for lunch and a short hike around Rainbow Lake. It was BEAUTIFUL. Such a beautiful walk, in fact, that the girls told us that they would happily hike it twice ("can you believe that mom?")!  The drive there was a bit unnervinng as GPS routed us along some dirt roads to the ice age trailhead rather than the park entrance, but it was most definitely worth it for the serene time we had. It's been special to have warm enough weather to go without a coat, but still see the snow/icy lake water. We had such a lovely time, we decided to make one more stop before spending the night in Rice Lake...

State Park Challenge #50: Big Bay State Park (03.21.2021)

We finally made it to Madeline Island! And how appropriately, to do so, in the week leading up to our lady Madeline's birthday! Unfortunately (and to add drama), there were only 2 trips to/from Madeline Island on the ferry due to the volume of ice still on Lake Superior. This pumped up our adreneline a bit as we arrived and saw 13 vehicles lined up for the early trip back to Bayfield. As a result, we did a fast-forward state park visit, made a quick hot chocolate, and rock hunted at the beach, and spent as much time in line for the ferry BACK to Bayfield as in the park. The realization of the possibility of car camping (if we missed that boat back) was an interesting expression on the faces of our entire family. It sure gave us a great story! We hope to visit again sometime to explore the town, LaPointe. On the upside, we spent the afternoon visiting the National Lakeshore at Meyers Beach, which was actually awesome.

State Park Challenge #49: Brule River State Forest (03.20.2021)

Spring break 2021 for the Meyer Family meant a long weekend in the North Woods. With COVID still a concern (we have not gotten vaccines in our household as of yet) we decided to generally avoid people and focus on some of the northern state parks in our Challenge. Our first stop was the Brule-St. Croix Portage Trail which is in the Brule River State Forest unit and also a section of the North Country National Scenic Trail. We clocked in about 4.1 miles out and back, and we learned that the section is one of the oldest trails as it was first cut by Native Americans, and also became important as part of the early fur trade established by the French. (History lesson!)  We were treated to gulps of water from an artisan spring at the trail head after, and m&ms...! It was actually a pretty great way to kick off our trip and break up our long drive to Bayfield, WI...

State Park Challenge #48: Kettle Moraine State Forest - Northern Unit (12.31.2020)

Well 2020 sure did not pan out as expected! However our family continues to be blessed and we are so very thankful. We decided to end the year just as we began it: with a hike! Snowfall earlier this week made it possible for us to dust off our snowshoes for the day as well. We rounded Mauthe Lake on the Tamarack Circle Trail (2 miles). Madeline made the entire trek with her snowshoes on (it's a workout!) We saw several fishermen on the lake, found several dedications on stones and benches along the trail, and Morgen even found an angel ornament hanging from a tree. It made me sooo happy to see that angel hanging there! We picnicked in the car, and the girls enjoyed hot chocolate before we headed home to start our New Year celebration. While 2020 was certainly a ride, we are ready welcome 2021!

State Park Challenge #47: Nelson Dewey State Park (10.31.2020)

Happy Halloween! The day was beautiful for a drive out to Nelson Dewey State Park. With only 2 miles of trails in the entire park, this one is tiny but with BIG views. The short trails hugged bluffs along the Mississippi River for amazing sightseeing. We learned the park was once the hobby farm of Wisconsin's first governor, and there is the Stonefield Historical site at the base of the park. Unfortunately for us, the historical site was closed for the season so we could only peer over the fence. However, the day was well spent as we were able to hike all 5 trails of the park, Morgen saw a snake (eeek!) and we basically had the place to ourselves. It was Halloween, so we picked up treats on the way home, including Potosi beer and ice cream from Culvers!

State Park Challenge #46: Flambeau River State Forest (10.11.2020)

In true Meyer State Park Challenge fashion, our drive home from the northwoods detoured an hour west, to Flambeau River State Forest. Never waste a chance to hike!  We detoured extra-extra mileage to visit the Smith Rapids Covered Bridge. Then we did a short nature walk at the Lake of the Pines, and another at Little Falls- Slough Gundy. This meant more water: a lake, rapids and another waterfall. The girls (and mom & dad) were hooked! This also meant a SUPER long drive home....and an ice cream stop in Plover, WI. You do what you gotta do!! Thanks for an amazing weekend family.

State Park Challenge #45: Copper Falls State Park (10.10.2020)

We have been eager to start visiting park destinations farther north. The parks, and beautiful fall colors, did not disappoint! We started our 2020 COVID getaway weekend in Copper Falls State Park, and hiked the Doughboy and Red Granite Falls trails. The waterfalls were simply breathtaking. That's all! We picnicked and then also headed to the Black River Harbor in Michigan, where the girls were able to touch Lake Superior, and then we were able to visit another 4 waterfalls. The whole family was thrilled and we came back to our hotel to enjoy dinner and a fame National Park Yahtzee: to his delight, Jon won!

State Park Challenge #44: Wyalusing State Park (08.29-08.30.2020)

Whoop whoop! it was time for our (annual) camping trip with the Cooper Family and this weekend was a whirlwind, but did not disappoint!

Our family arrived at Wyalusing State Park around 2:20pm on Saturday, set up camp and were on our way. We spent a fast 18 hours in the park but we packed it in! We hiked the Bluff Trail (and were able to visit Treasure Cave) and hiked the Sand Caves Trail (where we got to visit two more caves!) We estimate our mileage around 5 miles, which meant we definitley deserved our campfire grilled cheese and s'mores. The adventure and fresh air certainly aided a good night sleep for the girls! (Jon and Melissa may have been distracted out of sleep by the way too early morning coyote cries.,.)

Overall we enjoyed a fantastic weekend trip of scenery and great times with friends; especially NEEDED during a late COVID summer.

Thank you Cooper Family!

State Park Challenge #43: Black River State Forest (08.15.2020)

It was time to get out of the house and we did! We took a road trip up to Black River State Forest to hike the Castle Mound Trail, enjoy a picnic lunch and playground time, and just be together... NOT AT HOME! And so this trip was a success. We had great views, including a unique view from a former wildfire lookout, and ice cream on the way home (a quick stop in Wisconsin Dells).  During these long days of togetherness, even with a lot of family love going around, it was amazing to get out and enjoy all that our state has to offer. We are looking forward to our next adventure - Camping with the Cooper Family!

State Park Challenge #42: High Cliff State Park (07.18.-7.19 , 2020)

This year we booked a camping warm-up, in advance of our planned camping adventure with the Cooper family in August. Our destination: High Cliff State Park. It was the perfect adventure park! We arrived around 2:30 p.m. and set up camp. The girls were THRILLED. We then hiked them along the Lime Kiln trail, which wound us down to Lake Winnebago and along the Niagara Escarpment. We saw the ruins for a lime factory that was operational for 100 years (1856-1956), and got the girls some swim time in at the beach! Then it was time for campfire cooking and s'mores, and a family game of Trouble before bedtime. It would NOT be a Meyer camp adventure without a nice rain (thunderstorm), so we endured that in the middle of the night as well. After breakfast, we hiked two short trails: The Indian Mound Trail and the Butterfly Pond trails. We capped off the weekend with an ice cream cone and came home to clean-up and dry-out. There isn't much more fun to be had than a Meyer State Park Challenge weekend!

State Park Challenge #41: Copper Culture State Park (07.18.20)

With COVID-19 and tick season upon us, it's been a while since we hit the trail. Today we ventured to Oconto to check out this tiny park. We were actually surprised - it was THAT tiny! There was a historic museum dedicated to discussing the excavations that were done on the Native American mounds in the area in the 1950's; the teenager supervising the museum basically slept through our socially-distanced visit. We took a break for lunch, and then headed down to the Oconto River - bugs were an issue but another kind visitor from West Allis warned us and gave us bug spray. The trail to the river was almost not a trail, so we took the girls along the Bluebird trail to get a few steps in. Overall, we were confused because we did not see any mounds; assuming they have been dug up for study, I suppose there was a historical marker instead. Of interest was the BEE HIVE sign that warned visitors around a tree along the main path. We did learn a lot about copper mining and molding in the area, and it was a nice warm-up for our 2020 camping adventure.

State Park Challenge #40: Devil's Lake State Park (04.07.20)

Pandemic Hiking. It's a thing. And we found out exactly how popular today when we went, midweek, to Devil's Lake to explore. We finally had a warmer day, and thought a little outdoor time would perk up our dispositions. It turns out, pandemic hiking IS wonderful, but stressful.

Our first route was straight up, as we worked our way up the Balanced Rock Trail. The trail itself is less than half a mile, but straight up climbing is a little harder than we are used to, especially on a crowded trail. We turned back a bit before the top, as the narrow, crowded trail was too much for Melissa and Jon. (Sorry Madeline. People! SOCIAL DISTANCING!)

We meandered a bit by the lake, before deciding to visit nearby Parfrey's Glen. It has a 'mythical' following and we could see how enchanting this 0.7 trail would be with leaves on the trees. We ultimately turned back at the end of the formal trail, forgoing the waterfall, because we were not properly equipped to cross the stream.  (Sorry Madeline and Morgen!) We WILL be back.

So overall, not much hiking in terms of distance. However, we did get outside, which was needed. And we will be back, because this gem is practically in our backyard. What took us so long to visit?

State Park Challenge #39: Loew Lake - Kettle Morraine State Forest (03.21.20)

Happy Spring! We have kicked off spring break in an interesting way. Schools have already been closed a week due to a global pandemic: COVID-19. Wild. There isn't any other way to put it.

In light of statewide "social distancing", we decided to jump on it as an opportunity to tackle a Challenge park. So today, we took a field trip to the Loew Lake segment of the Kettle Morraine State Forest. We hiked 3 miles (1.5 out and back) on the Ice Age Trail segment that weaves through this part of the forest. It was MUDDY! To Morgen's utter delight! HA!

We also learned about eskers. Jon made a joke about going up the esker-ator and dared me to include that in this post; so here it is!

As the weeks unfold in an unpredictable way, here's hoping that we take advantage of these opportunities to explore our parks. Stay healthy all!

State Park Challenge #38: Pike Lake - Kettle Morraine State Forest (01.01.20)

A new year- a new decade - a new state park!

Today we ventured in on a “Day One Hike” organized by the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Somehow we missed the hot chocolate though! (Mom fail.) We did the shorter route, the green trail. Overall a lovely day for a walk in the woods, inspired by many other people doing the same thing!

Our excitement was a bit tempered by Madeline’s random bout of hives today. That was a surprise- but just goes to show that even when we start the day (year) with a twist, we go after it anyway! Here’s to a happy and successful 2020!

State Park Challenge #37: Kohler-Andrae State Park (12.28.19)

It sometimes seems as though we are destined to hike in damp, cold weather! But hike we do, nonetheless! Today we day tripped to Kohler-Andrae State Park and we managed to miss the heavy rains and adventure our hearts out. What a great way to finish up the Challenge year. We loved wandering down the Dunes Cordwalk trail, and took advantage of a few detours to the Lake Michigan shoreline. We then took a short, second trail: the Ancient Shores trail. We had no idea that the lakescape was so different during the glacial melting period. After, We rewarded ourselves with hot cocoa (and coffee) in a Kohler. Then we smiled the whole drive home, thankful to have enjoyed this “gem” park still in 2019. Happy New Year everyone!

State Park Challenge #36: Potawatomi State Park (10.13.19)

Our Challenge departure day brought us sleet and cold (COLD) weather. We decided to wing-it, and visit this park as a game time decision. Game time meant (of course!) that it was time.to.hike.

We were excited to visit the Eastern Trail-head of the Ice Age Trail. AWESOME. We did a quick  "in and out" hike to get us two miles along trail. We were blessed with views of Sturgeon Bay, and our favorite, "rocks and roots", in the forest along this trail. The tree canopy shielded us, mostly, from the inclement weather.  Morgen continues to make sure she has one, or one-hundred, walking sticks along with her on her hikes. Madeline continues to lead the way - as our adventure engine.
We are so thankful for this amazing weekend.

State Park Challenge #35: Newport State Park (10.12.19)

We weren't originally planning to visit Newport State Park on this trip. But when life gives you lemons (and no tee times at your golf course)....you move on to Plan B. Plan B turned out to be fantastic!

This park is located in Ephraim, WI. We were inching our way to the very tip of WI!  We tackled the Lynd Point/Fern Loop Trail, which winds around the coast, "jutting into Lake Michigan and back". It was worth every step.  The views and waves and twilight made the experience even more adventurous. We learned that the park is a designated "Dark Sky Park" from the International Dark-Sky Association; this inspires us for future adventures.

We ended our day at the local Piggly Wiggly, to stock up on popcorn and hot chocolate for the night.

State Park Challenge #34: Peninsula State Park (10.12.19)

We took the family on an "anniversary weekend" adventure, looking for fall colors. We got them! Along with some wind and sleet. We stayed in Sister Bay, at an awesome spot called "Goose & Twigs". The room and the breakfasts were amazing.

Our first park of the Challenge weekend was Peninsula State Park. WOW. There you go! Ha! Our family tackled the "difficult" Eagle trail. It wound around some bluffs along the bay. The girls loved exploring the caves (until Madeline saw a bat). And loved climbing over rocks and roots. Mud was involved.

We then visited the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, and were able to tour the space. Imagine growing up with your family of 9 - with 7 brothers in one tiny bedroom. WOW (again!)

We "tailgated" in the car, and then moved on to our next Challenge park...

State Park Challenge #33: Wildcat Mountain State Park (09.22.19)

Wow! This park is cool! We visited only briefly after a trip to Goose Bumps County Park for the 2019 GooseBumps Run/Walk.  However, we made the most of it.

The weather held out, and we got to go spelunking along the Ice Cave Trail. The best part, it is a ridge, and so we were able to spend a bit of time meandering under the cliff and enjoying the small waterfall and the view.  We also made it to the scenic overlook, and again: WOW! The glaciers did not flatten this part of the state, which makes for amazing views and exploration.

We had intended to camp at this park in 2018, but flooding thwarted our efforts. After visiting this year we all agreed that it is definitely worth a re-visit some day.

State Park Challenge #32: Blue Mounds State Park (08.24.19-08.25.19)

This adventure was all about Camping 2.0! We headed to Blue Mounds State Park to enjoy the trails, pool & splash pad, and an evening of camping with the Cooper Family. The weather was fantastic, the fire made great s'mores, and the kids had a blast playing with walkie-talkies and "owning" the campground loop.

We enjoyed walking the Weeping Rock and John Minix trails, and the playground between the East and West observation towers. That's right... there are two of them!  The weather was beautiful, but not hot, the wind was slow, but kept away the mosquitoes. We enjoyed every moment of conversation and the peace of our campground spot.  We hope to make it an annual (but "only once a year!") event with the Cooper family!

State Park Challenge #31: Yellowstone Lake State Park (05.26.19)

After lunch we headed over to Yellowstone Lake State Park, which was larger than we had anticipated. We decided to take a short trail, and hiked 2 miles on the Windy Ridge Trail. The trail was, in fact, as hilly as promised. The girls likely enjoyed the amphitheater stage as much as the trail.  Afterward we headed down to beach area number two of the day to cool off in the water. Madeline jumped right in, however Morgen preferred watching from the sandy beach. Before heading home for the day we stopped to enjoy ice cream at the concessions; SuperMan cones for both girls- YUM!  What a great weekend to tackle part of our "challenge"!

State Park Challenge #30: Cadiz Springs Recreation Area (05.26.19)

When we started hiking I saw a few people fishing and I decided that next time we go we are going to bring fishing things and go fishing.

Any way the hike its self was awesome and I enjoyed seeing Zander lake. It was beautiful; we saw lily pads and we saw a few fish (Minnie fish). Also before about half way there in the lake was beautiful spring reeds. About half way through it we got lost and Morgen was a little winy we just didn’t know where we were and we decided to take the road back. But we remembered how much fun we had seeing animals and plants.

After we took the hike we got in our car and drove to the beach. There was a park at the beach and before we played we had lunch. Then we got a little time to play at the park. After that Madeline told mom that she wanted to go to the beach so we got her swim suit on and went to the beach later Morgen also wanted to go to the beach so we got her swim suit on and went to the beach. We tried to catch fish but we couldn’t.

We had so much fun at Cadiz springs!

State Park Challenge #29: Richard Bong State Recreation Area (04.20.19)

Be amused - the destination for our challenge event on this date was NOT intentional.  The day was gorgeous for getting outside, and we wanted to end Madeline's spring break with some kind of adventure!

The adventure started with a tour at the Jelly Belly factory warehouse in Pleasant Prairie. The girls were excited to ride on the train and even more excited to shop for beans after. Madeline was thrilled to get the Bean Boozled pack, and Morgen opted for safer, seasonal beans.

With a sugar rush, we stopped at the Richard Bong state recreation area. The site was originally intended to be the home of a military airport during World War II. That didn't happen, and now the area has various trails and launch pads (for model rockets and airplanes). We walked about 2 miles along the green trail; there were several pond views and a lot of muddy spots to keep us interested and alert along the trail.  Overall, another wonderful family adventure.  Happy Easter!

State Park Challenge #28: Capital Springs Recreation Area (01.05.19)

Happy new year! We were excited to kick off  2019 with our first  challenge visit to nearby capital springs. We loved that the temperature was in the 40's - in January!!
We walked 2 miles of  trail and played in the park. We made a snowman and had a snowball fight
to entertain our our family. What an amazing start to the state park challenges of  2019!

State Park Challenge #27: Tower Hill State Park (12.15.18)

Yay! A beautiful December-Saturday meant that we had the opportunity to drive out to Tower Hill State Park for short jaunt up the bluff to explore.  Before this spot became a state park, it was the site of a "shot tower", where lead was mined and dropped down to the tributaries of the Wisconsin River to be shipped downstream to St. Louis. The site has also been a farm, and a Black Hawk War site. We had no idea that it existed! The state park challenge is wonderful for education.

The Shot Tower has been recreated, and we were able to walk into the Shot Tunnel next to the water. Yes, we did see a few bats (yuck). But it was very unique. The total walk was 1.5 miles, which was perfect and not too long for our shortest legs (Morgen) and rewarded all of us with a dose of sunshine.  Afterwards we rewarded ourselves with hot chocolate in Spring Green, and cheese from the Arena Cheese Factory. Yum!

State Park Challenge #26: Mirror Lake State Park (10.12.18)

We took a "Happy (early) Anniversary Hike" at Mirror Lake State Park and loved it. We meandered around the Echo Rock trail in the late afternoon, and then called it a day (realizing that Madeline rocked the Hootie Hustle fundraiser race early that day - and that makes for an exhausted kid!)  The trail winds around a bluff, and gave us a great view of Mirror Lake and fall colors. Afterward, we enjoyed each other's company for dinner at Sprecher. This was a great mini-adventure.  We love our family!

State Park Challenge #25: Governor Dodge State Park (09.29 - 09.30.18)

Yes, this title includes 2 dates because....we tried to camp during this challenge event. I say "tried" because it was miserable and we abandoned our site at 3:30am.  Who said fall camping is beautiful! It was cold and wet (42 degrees and raining, raining raining).

On the upside, we did an epic hike earlier on Saturday: the Meadow Valley Trail and the Cave Trail, for a peek into Thomas's Cave. It was 6.5 miles of steep grades and a difficult trail rating. This maybe was also not my best idea ever, as the girls each spent an hour at the park and an hour at their tennis lesson earlier in the day. But now we know to really evaluate trail ratings before walking...and we proved once again that Meyer girls are TOUGH.

After the hike, we headed over to the Tom's campground where Grandma and Grandpa Meyer graciously hosted us for dinner and dessert. It was a pleasant and dry visit...and then, the rain oh the rain!

Needless to say the visions of s'mores and a gentle campfire remain in our imaginations. We may just insist on a dry Challenge for our next event!

State Park Challenge #24: Chippewa Moraine Trails State Recreation Area (08.19.18)

The final destination of our marathon state park challenge weekend was Chippewa Moraine Trails State Recreation Area. Also a gem! While we made an interesting entrance (we might have driven in along someone's driveway...) we found the nature center which was really cool. The center had a ton of information about the glacial history of our state and was the most well done exhibit I have seen on the topic!  The girls also participated in a scavenger hunt hosted by the Ranger. Which was good, because it gave them a bit of a rest before we finished with one last trek...

... a hike just under 2 miles along the Dry Lake Trail. The trail had some modest 'switchbacks' down to a kettle lake and back up. After reading up about the area at the exhibit, you almost had a smug feeling as you wandered along the trail! And, finally, Jon had the opportunity to play hero, as he fished Madeline's scavenger hunt bracelet prize out of the fishless lake - parenting duties as assigned.  After a fabulous weekend of exploring, we were ready to go home...and plan our next adventure!

State Park Challenge #23: Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area (08.19.18)

Keep in mind that prior to our state park challenge weekend, Morgen informed us that she did NOT want to visit any more parks. Ha! Our Sunday challenge events had more walking in store for her. Our morning hike was just over 2 miles at Hoffman Hills state recreation area.  The trails at this park have awesome names! Had Jon and I traveled her alone, we definitely would have tackled the 'difficult' ones: Star Wars and Juba's Run. However, with girls in tow we scaled back to intermediate, and tackled the Skyline and Spruce Run trails, which took us to Mt. Fuji. This area is super hilly, and epitomizes the glacial terrain.  Interesting events:
1) we saw a hardcore hiker carrying a bag of solar salt (obviously in training for an event);
2) a moth chased Jon down the trial!; and
3) bear scat.
Yes; as we continue to go north, we may need to invest in bear spray in order to complete the challenge!

State Park Challenge #22: Brunet Island State Park (08.18.18)

After an exhausting morning, we headed over to Brunet Island State Park to see if we could turn events around. And we did! What a cute little gem. The park appears to be geared toward campers, but short trails wind around the island, connecting the beach, boat access and campground. We wandered along the river on the Spruce Trail, and wound across the island (and through the forested area) along the Timber Trail.  The girls then spent about 40 minutes eating snacks and enjoying the playground. The sun was shining and all was well once again!

Although not a state park, our dinner spot is worth mentioning. Together Farms hosted Burger Night; it's a family farm serving amazing fare and we loved every minute of our time at the farm.  Eight thumbs up from the Meyer Family!

State Park Challenge #21: Lake Wissota State Park (08.18.18)

We started a State Park Challenge Marathon weekend in the area surrounding Eau Claire, WI. Unfortunately, our Tinberg family-friends were unable to join us as planned this year - so we improvised. Although we missed them dearly, we paid extra attention to the details of the weekend and sent them a debrief; they were with us in spirit!

At Lake Wissota we hiked the Lake Trail which, ironically, didn't have as many views of the lake as you would imagine! We took it from the beach to the overlook and back, for a total of just over two miles. Then we had a picnic on the beach, played in the sand, and Madeline (accidentally) caught a fish.  The fish freaked out Morgen, a scuffle in the sand landed Morgen's sand castle across her body and over her face instead of on the beach. The result: more tears than we wanted for a State Park Challenge Event.  So we decided to move on to the next park...

State Park Challenge #20: Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit (07.06.18)

Today we went on a hike! A 4.18 mile hike. The girls did amazing; even Morgen hiked all but 0.33 miles (she needed a little lift).  For this Challenge outing we decided to tackle part of the Scuppernong Trail Unit, and we chose the "orange" loop.

The views on the trail were awesome.  Towering pine trees surrounded us for a good length of time and, as it's part of the Kettle Moraine area, there were plenty of hills to wander up and down.  The bright skies and sunshine were the perfect backdrop to the forest, and the temperature was also just right: not as hot as it has been, and not humid.  It was a great idea to do this trail today - we saw lots of fellow hikers!

After the hike, we decided to treat ourselves to a scenic drive across the forest to the forest beach access at Whitewater Lake.  It's a small beach, but the water was surprisingly warm and the girls enjoyed cooling off with a swim.  Overall this adventure was amazing; we felt accomplished and happy to have spent the day enjoying another Challenge event!

State Park Challenge #19: Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area - aka Badger Lands (07.05.18)

Badger Lands is the former site of the largest ammunition manufacturing plant in the world.  During WWII, there were 12,000 people employed here. During the Vietnam and Korean Wars, 5,000.  Since being decommissioned, the state begun to transform the land back to its native prairie land. The buildings have been removed. The trails are largely unmarked as the site is currently still being developed. Therefore we drove the 'public trail' and were surprised at the size of the site.  We also stopped at the volunteer run museum, where the girls were the 'first' kids to be given paper and crayons color pictures while the grown-ups studied the exhibits. (The volunteer told us this!)

We rounded out this State Park Challenge excursion with our first Merrimac ferry ride and ice cream stop. (What took us so long?)  Then we cooled off in the pool for a short swim at the DeForest KOA with the Handlos cousins.

Perfect.Summer.Day.

State Park Challenge #18: Natural Bridge State Park (07.05.18)

A few vacation days made for a great opportunity to make this Fourth of July holiday a state park challenge weekend!  With rain in the forecast, we decided to focus today on visiting two of our smaller destinations. Our first stop was Natural Bridge State Park.  In the middle of rolling hills and farmland, and only a short trek into the woods, there it was: the widest natural sandstone arch in Wisconsin. With a total of 4 miles of trail in this park, it really is small.  So we wound along the one mile loop-trail to the Bridge and back. Mosquitoes chased us along the whole way.  At this point, we were ready for our next stop!

State Park Challenge #17: Council Grounds State Park (05.28.18)

After a long holiday weekend of fun, sun and and family, it was time to head home....and our drive took us right past Council Grounds State Park.  The park is very small; trails share the one way roads through the park. There is a boat landing and a small beach. Since we were all exhausted, (yes Madeline- you need to learn to rest too!), we decided to spend our time in the park at the beach. We had an early lunch and waded in the water of the Wisconsin River. The surrounding pine trees were gorgeous, and the sun smiled on us.  Our time here was short, but peaceful.  It was a perfect stop to break up our drive home.

State Park Challenge #16: Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest (05.27.18)

We went "up north" for our annual Meyer Family camp trip - 2018 took us to Conover, WI (at Onkel Bill's Cabin). What a beautiful weekend. The HEAT, oh the heat. Who would have thought the girls would go swimming on Memorial Day weekend in the lake; other adventures included: Madeline caught an 18 inch fish, Morgen did not actually see Bond Falls, and Jon played Hasselhof in Stormy Lake! (Jon and Aaron were fine...but surprised by their unexpected swim.)

We spent Sunday morning visiting two trails that are featured in the Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest. This is a HUGE state forest, and we were close enough to both the stunning Star Lake Trail (2.6 miles) and the Tom Roberts Memorial Trail (0.5 miles) that we all earned our ice cream on this gorgeous Sunday.

The Star Lake Trail was truly stunning. The trail was right along the edge of a peninsula, with the lake to the left and towering pine trees to the right. Madeline documented our thoughts in the trail log as follows (if we remember correctly): "I loved the hike around the lake, my favorite was the biggest snake".

State Park Challenge #15: Cross Plains State Park (04.21.18)

Finally! After a snowy week in Wisconsin, spring showed up!   We met the Cooper Family at Cross Plains State Park, which is part of the Ice Age scenic reserve.  The area is not yet a developed park, and is comprised of federal, state and county lands.  The "trailhead' we accessed was at the "old Wilkies Farm" and we were entirely (pleasantly) surprised that this area was so close to home.

On the federal side, we walked past the farm and across a huge field, which is mowed (surprise).  It was fantastic to watch Madeline, Morgen, Ella and Jake run across the field...and we didn't have to hear them yelling!

On the state side, there was a nice loop trail that took us right to Wilkies Gorge and through a meadow and through woods which left the kids with lots of time for climbing and secrets, and time for the grown-ups to catch with each other as well.

All the kids made the 2.5 miles and so we rounded out the afternoon at Yola's Cafe for snacks and more conversation.  We can't wait to meet up with our Cooper Family on another State Park Challenge hike!

State Park Challenge #14: Buckhorn State Park (03.30.18)

Our second spring break State Park Challenge visit of the day brought us to Buckhorn State Park. This park is located along the Castle Rock Flowage, which was a surprisingly large area.  The park is obviously intended to support amazing water activities. However, since it was March, we chose to walk the Barrens Nature Trail.  Also, since Morgen did not actually see the park or the trail, (she was exhausted and had her head resting on our shoulders), and Madeline has been under the weather, we only did 3/4 mile of this trail.  But I think we get bonus points for carrying Morgen the whole way!

Although it was an abbreviated visit, we learned that barrens used to cover areas of central Wisconsin (savannah grassland/prairie), despite the presence of pine and oak trees in the area.  We learned about several endangered species that require the unique vegetation of the barrens for survival (Slender Glass Lizards and the Karner Blue Butterfly are examples).   We may be inspired to plant a few more native flowers this spring!

State Park Challenge #13: Mill Bluff State Park (03.30.18)

We took the opportunity we had: Spring Break & a Good Friday vacation day for the family.  On Thursday we surprised the girls, drove to Tomah, and took advantage of a hotel with a pretty cool pool set-up: with a few slides and a hot tub. On Friday, we hit the trails at two of the smaller State Parks (considering distance of available hiking trails).  Our first visit was to Mill Bluff State Park.

Technically, this park was not yet "open" for the season and so visitors park outside the fee area and hike in; this was only of interest because that also meant the bathrooms were locked!

We arrived around 10 am, coffee in hand (for the grown-ups), and walked the Camel's Bluff Trail.  The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and we still found a few icy/snow patches along this 1.25 mile trail. It was actually a beautiful morning and a beautiful walk. We then found the trail head for the climb up Mill Bluff.  We climbed up the 223 stone steps, installed in the 1930's, which bring you to the summit of this bluff.  The girls were happy to also play a few minutes on the playground before we made the trek on to our next Challenge location...

State Park Challenge #12: Governor Nelson State Park (03.18.18)

How do you like to spend a brisk, sunny Sunday? The Meyer Family decided to take on our next State Park Challenge site, at nearby Governor Nelson State Park. The hike was short and muddy, but still fun. We accessed the Woodland Trail, but soon wound down the Redtail Hawk Trail, which wound through the drier prairie land, instead of the muddy woods. As a bonus, the name matched the Horizon School mascot. (Go Horizon Redtail Hawks!)  After the walk, we found a picnic table next to the beach and overlooking Lake Mendota.  We all enjoyed lunch and the girls enjoyed the beach - even though it was too cold to swim.  This trip is a great memory and we are looking forward to our next adventure.

State Park Challenge #11: Big Foot Beach State Park (02.3.18)

Well, the Meyer family did justice to the "challenge" aspect of our State Park Challenge with our visit to Big Foot Beach State Park in Lake Geneva.  The scene was to be picturesque; a quiet evening of snowshoeing on a short, lantern lit trail.  There is not a lot of mileage for hiking in this park and so we thought this plan, the 2018 Candlelight Hike, was the way to make our visit special.

Instead of serenity...we marched onto the trail and were chased through it by a snowstorm.  Oh yes.  Instead of snowshoes we hiked down the path while the wind blow over the lanterns. (um, fire risk...)  Madeline was upset as Jon stomped out a few burning lantern bags that had tipped over, and Morgen sat sobbing at the post-hike refreshments picnic table because the snow was in her face.  Ha! On the upside, both girls enjoyed some hot chocolate, and Madeline roasted two marshmallows from the s'more kit. (AS FAST AS SHE COULD GET THEM DONE!)

Then we were off - for a treacherous ride home in the dark, on country roads, through the storm. Jon managed the drive like the trooper he is.

This one was both beautiful and brutal. It was an adventure.

State Park Challenge #10: Rocky Arbor State Park (01.07.18)

We kicked off the New Year with frigid temperatures, but FINALLY managed to get out of the house this past weekend. This led to our first State Park Challenge visit of 2018!

Our family sported new footwear as we enjoyed a sunny afternoon walk at Rocky Arbor State Park: in snowshoes!!

The park itself is small and very focused on summer camping.  The nature trail is just 1 mile, which made it the perfect setting for our first snowshoe trek.  The trail is located between sandstone bluffs and among the pine trees; convenient because the bluffs blocked any wind.  The trail loop is marked on either end by a wooden staircase; challenging to navigate in snowshoes, but we have skills...

Madeline and Morgen were troopers; even though Morgen decided to ditch the snowshoes after 10 minutes, she completed the walk on her own.  And of course, Madeline led the way!  Afterward we enjoyed a hot chocolate treat in town and discussed the potential for our next trek.

We are looking for to many 2018 park visits!

State Park Challenge #9: Aztalan State Park (10.14.17)

Today we celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary AND visited a new state park as part of our challenge.  Aztalan is not a big state park, and it is not far from Sun Prairie (it is near Lake Mills).  However, it proved to be the perfect rainy-day destination for today.

Our visit was brief; we meandered among the three mounds for 40 minutes, and looked (very diligently) for THE PERFECT spot to walk down to the Crawfish River. The river access was necessary because the two girls were insistent that we throw the "big leaves" into the water.  The slope was steep, and the ground wet, so this actually made mom and dad more nervous than was necessary.

We had no idea that there Native American mounds so near to our hometown!  The site dates from approximately 1200 AD.  It was very interesting; peaceful.  Until it started pouring rain and then we retreated to the School Grounds coffee shop in Cottage Grove (another 'bucket list' destination).  Overall we had a lovely late morning/early afternoon.

State Park Challenge #8: Perrot State Park (09.03.17)

As a finale to the Meyer-Tinberg 2017 adventure, we set out to explore Perrot State Park.  This park has it all! Beautiful trails, bluffs and river views/access!  To make the most of our morning, we hiked about 2.5 miles along the Prairie Ridge Trail: to the top of the bluff, along the ridge, and back down part of a ski trail (a portion of the trail was washed out...surprise!)
The elevation at the top was 507 feet, and the view was STUNNING.
We heard 'songbirds' along the way.  Madeline was a hiking trooper, and both she and Morgen serenaded us with various tunes, including a rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
We are so thankful to have enjoyed two parks on our list with Greg and Linsay - nature is enjoyed best with friends and family!  And our verdict on this park is that we would definitely consider a revisit!!

State Park Challenge #7: Merrick State Park (09.02.17)

We had a Little House inspired adventure over Labor Day weekend with the Tinberg Family.  As part of this we were able to enjoy time at Merrick State Park.  This park is narrow, with only a few, short trails.  We did just over a mile hike through a wooded area, enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch and playground time.
After resting a bit, Greg & Linsay, and Melissa & Morgen jumped aboard canoes to explore (a very short) bit of the canoe trail!  Although we only lasted about 30 minutes in the water, it was beautiful and relaxing paddle time.  Morgen commented on lily pads and 'bugs' she heard as we crossed the waters.  A few larger, motor boats did cross our paths, but the group maneuvered through the wake like pro's.  We felt accomplished enjoying our first water-oriented park adventure, and hopefully next time Madeline & Jon will have the opportunity to appreciate the park from the water.

State Park Challenge #6: New Glarus Woods State Park (07.03.17)

This park was another date-day opportunity for Jon and Melissa, with the girls enjoying pre-fourth of July fun with their friends at Becky's Daycare.  New Glarus Woods is what I would consider a smaller state park - with a focus on campsites and access to the Sugar River State Trail.  We walked the longest trail, which was the Havenridge Trail (4.2 miles).  From this trail, we accessed the Sugar River State Trail by walking from the park on the Sugar River Trail Spur. Our total hike for the day was just under 7 miles.  It was a beautiful, beautiful day for a walk in the woods.  We enjoyed a quick picnic lunch afterward, and then adventured across the street from the park to the renovated New Glarus Brewhaus for a pint in the biergarten.  It was a PERFECT afternoon!

State Park Challenge #5: Hartman Creek State Park (06.25.17)

This park is beautiful. Stunning. Picturesque.  What a way to cap off our weekend camping event!
After celebrating the 40th anniversary of Ralph and Phyllis, we set off to see what Hartman Creek had to offer and we were not disappointed!
Our Meyer family enjoyed just over 3 miles of trails, including a 1 mile trek on the Dike Trail between Mid and Hartman lakes.  We also hiked the 1 mile Pope Lake Trial, through a pine tree 'plantation'; from the trail, you could peek between the trees to see serene Pope Lake.  The girls enjoyed playing in the sand on the beach and at the playground (it was too cold for swimming!)  Before we headed out, we enjoyed a picnic in the parking lot, and then had an opportunity to visit the historic Hellestad House, which is a restored log cabin that was built in the 1800s.
We would definitely have been able to spend more time here if we had the energy.  Instead, we will have to come back sometime to explore some more.

State Park Challenge #4: Roche-A-Cri State Park (06.23.17)

We stopped at this lovely state park on our way to the (annual) Meyer Camping weekend at Luwisomo.  The park itself is not big, but it does have a big attraction! We climbed up the 300+ stairs to the observation deck and were able to see the view from above, including several Native American mounds.  We learned that the rock formations we saw in the park and the surrounding area are sandstone, and remnants of ancient Lake Wisconsin.  We were also able to see the Native American petroglyph messages on one of the rock formations near the entrance to the park.  We only hiked about a mile, but it was definitely a charming visit.

State Park Challenge #3: Lapham Peak (06.03.17)

This trip was for mom and dad only: Big thanks to Emily and Paul for hosting a cousins' play date!!! They had so much fun and we had an uninterrupted conversation!
We walked the blue/black trails for just around a 2 1/2 hour, 7 mile trek through the prairie and the forest. It was BEAUTIFUL.  We walked through a few rain drops and a lot of sunshine (and humidity).  We also took a peek out from the top of the observation tower, and walked through the butterfly garden to do a plant check. *You can never have too many flowers and beneficial insects!*   I will say it again, the views were stunning.  After the walk, we enjoyed a refreshing brew at the Delafield Brewhouse, and then brought back pizza to enjoy with the family.

State Park Challenge #2: Lake Kegonsa State Park (05.14.2017)

Although our visit was 2.5 hours, of that time:
10% was spent walking a short trail twice (total probably 1 mile)
40% was at the beach playground
40% was spent by the Meyer-lings throwing rocks in the lake
and the final 10% was spent snacking (these Meyer's eat a lot!)

Having experienced a very small space in the park, I will say our focus on the lake was ON PURPOSE because: 1) mosquitoes are already rampant (therefore the wetlands trail was a no go) and 2) ticks are horrific (I saw one on my pants even though we had been on a paved trail...therefore no go on the Oaks trail).

However, the lake is beautiful and the weather was perfect.  Lots of picnic tables, grills and a small beach (and a separate small beach for pets).  And of course, an awesome playground space!
Madeline quote: "This is my favorite park ever. I don't want to leave."

State Park Challenge #1: Rib Mountain State Park (04.22.2017)

This is the state park that started it all…our State Park Challenge!  On our way through the Wausau area, on our way to celebrate our Godson’s first communion in Antigo, we spent the day in Wausau.  Inspired, we decided to make a brief visit (40 minutes) to Rib Mountain State Park – with the highest point in Wisconsin.  Our visit was brief, but impactful.  We climbed the tower (and I almost had a nervous breakdown at the height of the tower with Morgen itching to adventure around).  We saw …SNOW… on the hillside, left over from the ski-season.  We climbed over a few rocks to take in the view.  Unfortunately we also saw someone get hurt.  A woman hit her head on the rocks she was climbing…and the girls still mention that event; a reminder of the responsibility to take care of yourself and respect your limitations AND nature.

Now the girls might have thought the short hiking we did up the hillside were too much – which means we need to up the ante in preparation for our August trip to Portland and the sightseeing we have planned there.  Therefore, the challenge is on…!

The Origin of the State Park Challenge

Sometimes, we have great ideas. Sometimes, we THINK we have great ideas. But this one I think could be a winner.
We have recently decided to create our very own Meyer Family State Park Challenge.  The purpose of the challenge is to make the effort to visit all our Wisconsin State Parks in the next 5 years.
Actually, I think it is a pretty aggressive goal, considering how many there are and our concurrent vacationing plans.  However, what better way can there be to make the conscious effort to enjoy the natural wonders of our state!

Yummy in my Tummy with Strawberries on my Face!

AND....

Knock Knock
Who's there?
Santa Claus in his underwear!

We are hitting a stride in the Meyer house - with Morgen sharing some pretty hilarious one-liners and jokes whenever possible.  Madeline loves to giggle right in her face, egging her on. Mostly, of course, at bedtime...when we all should be winding down.

It has been SUCH a long time since our last post. This has been largely due to the fact that life is crazy busy.  BUT it is also due to the fact that the Blogger app appears to no longer be supported for the iPad.  Which means we have to do this on a computer. AND our computer has an operating system no longer supported by the web (pretty much).  Which means I am typing this on a laptop "in my spare time".

So what has happened in the last year.  I don't know where to begin! SO MUCH.  Notably, the family visited Omie and Opie in Nuevo Vallarta for a long weekend in January. How fabulous! We have two little beach ladies in our family - and there were tears shed on the way home from that trip.

Madeline has been rocking first grade; loving every minute of school.  Making new best friends.  And I can really tell, becoming more perceptive every day.  Conversations are wonderful.

Morgen has informed me she is ready for kindergarten. I informed her she can go, when she is five.  I think the next 2 years are going to fly by.

We are looking forward to planting the vegetable garden and flowers in the next few weeks.  We are planning our "annual" Meyer extended family gig at LuWisoMo campground and, this year, will be celebrating a milestone anniversary with Grandma and Grandpa Meyer.  After that we will gear up for all kinds of summer fun, including a trip to Portland to visit the Cass Family! and a trip to Pepin, WI to celebrate all things Laura Ingalls Wilder with our Tinberg Family!  (Yay!)

In the meantime, we hope this post finds everyone happy and healthy! Happy spring!

Superhero

The past few weeks have been busy.  Madeline has grown up and is loving first grade. Morgen is coming into her own, thinks she is hilarious, and runs around with grey blanket around her shoulders yelling "I am a superhero". I have no doubt that she is.

The other current kiddo obsession is "kinder surprise eggs" on YouTube. Which has made me 1) promise to buy 4 surprise eggs when we go to Germany 🇩🇪 (they are illegal in the U.S.) and 2) tolerate DIY Surprise eggs, aka toys covered in Play doh. Can you comprehend the mess?!

I love my family!

Madeline's Last Day of Kindergarten

"When one door closes another one opens."- Words of Wisdom at Jumpstart

Today was Madeline's last day of kindergarten and we have spent the last two weeks or so working up toward it.  Still, I don't think we were quite prepared for her response....which was tears, and a few rounds of them.  It is hard to convey the depth of emotion I watched her work through as she contemplated a WHOLE SUMMER away from school, her friends, and her beloved kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Winterfield.  We emphasized that Mrs Winterfield would always be her kindergarten teacher, but that there are so many new adventures waiting for her.

Cheers Maddie! Great work this year! We are proud of you.

No Like Ham!

It's been a busy year...and already the end of March?! While it seems as though Madeline started school just last week we have passed many milestones including a first field trip, the 100 th day of school (that's a thing now?), our first daddy daughter dance, family movie nights, and more.  Already we are approaching the final stretch of the school year, as we are halfway through spring break.

One of the biggest surprises for me in this past month have been the strides she has made in reading. As in books not just in the nightly book bag! The class celebrated Dr Suess' birthday a few weeks back and with that came a renewed interest in all our Suess books, especially One Fish Two Fish, Hop on Pop, and Green Eggs and Ham. Maddie reads one of them, it seems, every night. Green Eggs and Ham is definitely the favorite. And not just of our eldest Meyer Lady.

Not to be outdone by her sister, Morgen grabs the book when Madeline is finished, flips through the pages, and yells to us, "No Like Ham!" With authority. Boom. She Doesn't miss a beat. And grins.

Pray

Well it has been another crazy few weeks, and we still haven't back filled entries. Whew! But we have so much to celebrate and be thankful for right now. 2016 is just a few short days away and Melissa is lucky enough  to be spending them with the girls for winter break. We all spent a whirlwind Christmas together, first a visit to Grandpa Boche at Linden Grove, then Christmas Eve with the Douglass/Lehner clan in West Bend, Christmas Morning with the Schweinert's in Menomonee Falls, and rounding out the afternoon and evening with Family Meyer in New Berlin. Jon went back to work Monday night and a snowstorm has kept the girls home puns...which has actually been wonderful as it has slowed the week down for us. Although the constant snack requests are crazy.

But tonight was extra special. Our little Morgen prompted the bedtime prayer with the simple words..."now I".  I am sure only a mom could hear the sporadic words from the poem from her mouth as Madeline sang it out...but it melted a heart to hear those words from such small sweet lips. We have SO much to pray about.

Busy Days

We have been so blessed and busy!  And we hopefully will have time to go back and add details but At this point, let's do a quick recap:
* Madeline started kindergarten
* Morgen started going to Ms Becky's without her beloved "Ma"
 * We started religion classes
* Madeline is back in tennis
*Morgen leaned (and uses) the word  NO

The girls have seriously grown up in a crazy way these past few weeks. It is all we can do to try and slow it down and savor the moments.

Today we had the great opportunity to take our 2015 4 Generation Ladies picture. We can't wait to hang it up in the hallway. Then we had the chance to visit with Opa Franz, and dad got to visit with Great Grandpa Boche. There have been some health issues all around for some of our (great) grandparent clan, and we are so thankful to be able to visit with everyone and share hugs. We have so much love to share! We visited with Tom, Meagan and smiley, lovable Lena. And We finished our evening with a fantastic dinner with Omie and Opie and a not so fantastic drive home (thank you Morgen for crying 48 minutes of the drive...).

Time is flying by and in no time we will be working through 2016 and meeting our newest cousin, Baby Schweinert. We are so excited!  We wish everyone a safe holiday season!

Well, It's Logical......

Today our six month old Morgen sat on my lap, pulled her nuk out, sneezed, then put her nuk back in....it still managed to spray me...but mission accomplished, her nuk was untouched.....

Dad Banned Tape.....

Yup...you heard it...I banned tape....not sure how it came to this..I am usually pretty open about artistic projects....I have even become better in letting the mess alone until the project is done...but Madeline was SO interested in scotch tape because of course it is so useful.  She used it to make multiple projects...using her imagination to create crowns, utensils, barbie castles...flowers, capes, Rapunzel dresses and anything she could practically tape together.  On a side note....Madeline has a crazy interesting imagination.  She is always whisking away as a princess or creating a full course meal for her Mom and I...

But tape...it got out of hand...Madeline single handed-ly went through four rolls of scotch tape in a week....and we found it EVERYWHERE......then she asked for the packing tape..and this is where Dad had to put his foot down:) I mean its coming up on Christmas..we need this stuff!!!!

Madeline was devastated..until she found an viable alternative...

STICKERS

EVERYWHERE...

Oh geez.....I got nothing.....

Dear Morgen....Oh How You Keep Us On Our Toes......!!!!

Wow,
That is all I have to say of the last six months...WOW.  What a blessing our family is.  We have just been a crazy happy family and feel so blessed and thankful.  Little Morgen, you are AWESOME...so many things can be said for how much you have grown..and your little crazy intuitive personality really has come through.  You are an awesome little sister, and your big sister Madeline just bursts at the seams ready to love you and play with you.

It really is crazy how much both girls are the same, yet COMPLETELY different.  The one similarity both girls share is that they don't seem to want to sleep..ever....from Madeline negotiating another bedtime snack to Morgen waking up multiple times during the evening to "snuggle" this has been our world the last six months...well, lets face it...HUGE props to super Mom Melissa since she takes the majority of the night time antics with little Morgen.
So its pretty crazy...Morgen is a mover and a shaker..which we totally didn't expect given her "in utero" state...at one point we would sit and wait for her to move before she was born..but it seems that once she was born she said to herself..."OK..what can I investigate?"  We should have known when she lifted her head up 30 seconds after she was born..if we thought we could contain her..we were sorely mistaken!  And it just went on from there...on September 22nd she rolled back to tummy..which followed by rolling across the floor into things...and the week of Christmas is coming up and she is doing what I classify as crawling...on all fours.  It was funny...we went to her three month appointment and she had just started to roll....and the doctor asked how it was going..and i told her if I put Morgen on the ground she would roll out the door.  Melissa and I always joke that she's going to be driving soon!

Oh..and the cooing has started...Morgen likes to coo in her crib in the morning..it actually sounds a little like an owl..but the smile and the kicking of her legs when you come in and pick her up is priceless..she's really happy to begin the day..probably so she can get EVERYWHERE she isn't supposed to be.
So Morgen doesn't really wail...she "baby squawk complains"  I would describe this as a more of an annoying cry...not annoying in the sense that it hurts your ears..but that SHE is annoyed cause she isn't in a place she wants to be...you see...when you answer it..it is really a means to an end...cause basically she either wants you to hold her facing out so she can kick her legs and see...anything..or simply put her down on the ground so she can wiggle and roll..so far she has rolled into the "command center" as well as maneuvered her legs under the couch...yeah...she's everywhere.....

Morgen has also started some "solid" foods..and by that I mean mush foods...it was funny..she was different from Madeline in that sense also..we started foods around six months with Madeline..and she wanted nothing to do with them...FYI..now she LOVES food!  Morgen on the other hand couldn't wait to get her face in anything at four and a half months..we waited until five months and she went gangbusters with rice cereal, oatmeal, carrots and squash.  Applesauce is another story..she kind of makes a face when she eats it...:)  And of course she always prefers milk.

Madeline LOVES her little sister, and it is really fun to see them interact with each other.  Mom and Dad just stand back and watch because it seems Madeline is the ONLY one who at this point can make Morgen belly laugh, cackle and giggle uncontrollably.  It must be a sister thing.  Madeline gets in her face and makes faces and talks to her and Morgen thinks it is the silliest thing..and then they laugh at each other...it really is cute.  Madeline has been such a big help around the house, from getting diapers and cremes to entertaining Morgen, she is always one to be "all in" the current situation..which is awesome.  Just sitting back and watching our two girls is an event we really look forward to.  Madeline in the process has been getting so independent; she relishes the fact she has a little sister..but yet also that she is the big sister that can do things Morgen can't do yet..and reminds us so:) There isn't a day that goes by where the family is lacking in some artistic project, whether it be a rendition of a drawing..or Madeline's artistic nature coming across in her selection of attire in the morning.  Both girls are really good kids.  Our family is TRULY blessed and Melissa and I are thankful to God for both of them!

It's How We Roll Every Four Years....

Consistency is the key...and as you can see from our fan comparison above...the 2014 World Cup was no exception...this is 2010 vs 2014..cheering on our teams...the USA was out of the tournament in both cases at this point..so Maddie and Morgen are cheering on Germany!!! Congrats to the 2014 champs!!!!

Only One Birthday Wish.....

So Maddie only has one birthday wish...oh...and she's decided it well in advance..considering we are nine months out......she wants to go to a special restaurant that we always drive by on the way home from places...a special local establishment....she describes it as...."the place you guys say doesn't have good food....the sit down place" Here are some of the places that other kids may ask for.....

"I want to go to McDonalds..."
"I want to go to Chuck E Cheese..."
"I want to go to Culvers...."

Maddie's choice is none other than Erin's Snug Irish Pub....
Our kid wants to go to a bar for her 5th birthday......

Summer Sports

Our biggest littlest lady sure has been pumped to be outside and starting the summer sports routine.  We had a full docket of activities planned for her.  During the month of May she was involved in tennis lessons.  This was a once a week hour long lesson on a Saturday that taught the beginner fundamentals of the sport.  And the instructor was hilarous....Melissa and I commented on how she maintains her enthusiasm each week...with a slew of four year olds running around..forming lines..listening to instructions can be challenging at times....and of course Maddie likes to conversate with everyone..which is cute....oh..and some skills were learned...forehand, backhand..running accross the court and hitting on the fly as well as teamwork...Maddie was reluctant to use the "one hand forehand approach" and instead gripped the racket with hands of steel..UNTIL she did it once and realized that she could CRUSH the ball twice as far if she wound up..and wind up she did....sometimes missing..but more often than not connecting with the ball...it was a great rewarding experience..and one I'm sure we will repeat....now she is after me to get an "M" on her racket....she saw the shock absorber I had on mine when we were practicing...it was a "W" for Wilson...but she wants an "M" for Madeline....:)

Right now during the Month of June we dove (literally) headstrong into swimming lessons....Maddie is a "Whale" in the Sun Prairie swim program...and thoroughly enjoys lessons...she splashes around, listens to directions well, is learning back floats, front crawl, water safety and putting her head in the water....sometimes....you really can't go wrong when there are games and ice cream at home at the end....really..come on....Maddie really is pumped since she gets to showcase her skills in front of Mama, Papa and Morgen as we all came to watch the second week....next up...more swimming and SOCCER!!!!  Go Maddie!

The First Wonderful Three Weeks.....

Holy cow...our family really is blessed.  This past Tuesday Morgen was officially three weeks old...and just taking time to think back how this past three weeks has flown by and how many activities we have fit in just make my head spin....First of all..the family is all happy and healthy..Morgen is continuing to grow and eat very well...in fact at her two week appointment she weighed in at 8lbs 13oz which is up from 7lbs 3oz from her hospital discharge weight..which is precisely on schedule.  She is growing well in all catagories...the past weeks have seen her show more awake time and she is learning to master the "stare without cross-eyes" technique.  No longer can Papa always look at her and say..."If you are hungry...if you are poopy...if you love your family....then....."stare with cross eyes:)"
Sleep is coming..in spurts....Morgen sleeps all the time...although she seems to be somewhat noctornal..and we are just seeing some changes in that she is staying just a little content more in the evenings....although as all parents know..there is a certain time of night...the "witching hour" which Morgen has identified as anytime between 730 and 10pm.
Mom continues to be a rockstar juggling all sorts of home things with caring for our newest blessing..in fact she single handedly took Maddie to her swimming lessons when Morgen was two weeks old...they stood under the canopy and watched.  THANK YOU to Marilyn for spending the Wednesday and Thursday with us during the first week of Swimming lessons...while Jon was on night shift...we REALLY appreciate the help, cleaning, time to relax and the bonding with Maddie and Morgen...thank you!
Special thanks to all of the family's support and visitors..we love all you guys.  We were able to come home from the hospital the Thursday after Morgen was born and boy was her big sister Madeline happy to see us!  Special thanks to Grandma Meyer for holding down fort Meyer and taking care of Maddie while we were at the hospital.  Maddie and Grandma met Morgen at the hospital the day she was born so they were excited to see how she had grown (slightly) in a couple days.  We took a ton of first Big Sister pictures and Morgen presented Maddie with her gift of a princess wand and slipper....she LOVES them and we hear "clop, clop, clop" all over the house...I think she cast a spell on me the other day.....We were also visited by Omi and Opi to see their newest Granddaugher..and the visit was awesome..a time just to let Morgen adapt and meet everyone..she even opened her eyes for Opi!!!  Priceless moments:)
Tom and Meagan were able to visit us the next Saturday to meet Morgen.  A HUGE thanks to them for spending 3-4 hours with Maddie; she was super excited to show off her lincoln log and play doh skills...and come to find out..Onkel Tom was super excited about his play-doh skills also...we had a great visit with the topped off with...pizza.
On Sunday Onkel Mike and Amber came to visit...to meet Morgen for the first time.   They were super excited..and Morgen was super sleepy....Later that day Omi and Opi and Oma Resee and Opa Franz stopped by to meet Morgen..Oma Resee was in love...and was just over the moon...another awesome moment.  Oh!! And Oma Resee cooked for us!!! THANK YOU!! You can never go wrong with a full meal from Oma:)  After a quick visit from Grandpa and Grandma Meyer as they were heading out of town (Grandpa first met Morgen:) the first couple days visits were complete...:)
Wow...crazy first week huh!!!!!

Thanks to all our family for their love, visits and gifts during this exciting time...we really appreciate it...it is great to know we are surrounded by such phenomenal family and friends!!!

You've Got to Focanize!!!

Love this...these are the awesome words of Madeline...she was really busy doing an art project with stickers and we were listening to her talk to herself..she said over and over again that she needed to "focanize" on what she was doing...and with every word got deeper and deeper into her project...good words of wisdom from a four year old...focanize and be in the moment.....subtle "Madeline" word that brings a smile to our face...
Meanwhile...just an outside thought....man...i really need to focanize on the transition of getting a sleeping baby from my arms to a crib...holy cats..forgot how difficult that was...:)

You Don't Have to Have......

Talk about perks....did you know you don't even have to have a formal birth certificate..or social security card to be a ranking member of the Sun Prairie Public Library reading program!  Thats right...Morgen became 2014's youngest member of the reading program making her eligible for fabulous cash prizes....well...a board book......She joins her sister who is participating in her third straight year....its actually pretty cool as some of the milestone prizes include Mallards game passes, fair passes, a farm pass and stickers and bookmarks....a great program to enhance reading...which has always been very important in our family....we are excited to see Maddie continually love to read and also introduce Morgen to some good baby books....:)

The Relationship

We are very happy to report that Maddie is absolutely thrilled and excited to be a big sister.  It truly has been a blessing to see her initial reactions first when she found out she was going to be a big sister...continuing to the conversations as we got closer to the event, and finally when she got to hold little Morgen in her arms for the first time.  It was remarkable to see her grin from ear to hear as she held her gently.  She truly is a happy big sister.
The transition in the first week was full of its great moments as well as challenges to be expected.  For sure there was no lack of love between Maddie and Morgen, in fact Maddie wanted so much to help us with the every day tasks of taking care of her new sister.  She has been truly energetic and excited to welcome her to the family.  Maddie has been great at getting diapers ready, butt paste and wipes, as well as always wanting to bring out Morgen's books and read to her.  Maddie even helped Morgen get her first couple check marks in the Sun Prairie Library reading program.  Maddie tells us that she and Morgen are going to go together to the library to collect the prizes:)  They are remarkable together.  Our biggest challenge right now is that Maddie is so interested in giving Morgen hugs, kisses and attention that sometimes we need to emphasize gentleness and slowing down vs eneloping her in hugs:)  And of course there have been some challenges of attention as expected given the addition of the newest family member.  The family is doing well though, emphasizing individual time with Mama and Papa as well as major family time with all four of us focused around dinner, reading and of course...the World Cup....

In Case You Were Wondering.....

So "Flower" is Morgen's lovingly adopted middle name by her big sister Madeline...you see we didn't know the sex of the Baby as we wanted it to be a surpise...when asked by Mom and Dad what she would name the baby if it was a boy the answer was "Blue" and if it was a girl it would be "Flower"...she's sticking to her guns....:)
Oh...and if anyone cares...Maddies filled wet diaper smelled like Cheerios....Morgen's smells like Asparagus......

I Have A Baby Sister....Her Name is Morgen Flower.....

So says Madeline with joy as she is playing on the playground with the other kiddos..she is soooo excited to be a big sister..and we as a family are sooo blessed.  We truly thank God for our two blessings.
So as you can probaby tell it has been a pretty crazy week.  On an eventful Tuesday morning June 17, 2014 at 10:00 AM we welcomed a beautiful healthy baby girl into this world.  Morgen Anne Meyer made her appearance at 7lbs 9oz and 20 inches long.  She came out...looked around and let out a beautiful loud cry...it was pretty cool:)
So in the interest of all of you who want to know all the events of that day...let me tell you...they were pretty interesting.  Morgen had a due date of 6/18 so of course we were on high alert..and quite honestly were kind of in the mindset that she was overdue since Maddie decided to come a week early..and the logical people we are...we follow trendlines...such is not the process of babies being born...they do what they want..as we soon found out.  Along with eagerly anticipating the arrival of a little one....of course we were paying close attention to the 2014 World Cup...I mean..who isn't??? On a side note....Jon fully believes 2014 is going to be a fantastic sports year similar to 2010 in terms of the Green Bay Packers...I mean...Maddie born...World Cup.....Packers Super Bowl win......see what I'm doing there??????? Ok..back to the World Cup....We had invited the Coopers over to watch the USA vs Ghana game..it was a great game...we had pizza and good socialization.  And of course at the 32 second mark we all jumped up crazily cheering....everyone..including Melissa who sat down suddenly....she was cheering on the US team through their win...and then when everyone left..she sat down on the couch and said..."I don't think this Baby is going to wait until Wednesday (6/18)"  Turns out the minute the goal was scored...unbenownstt to everyone else..the party had started...the slightest twinge of a contraction was evidence that events were about to unfold.
So being the planning people we were we made immediate plans to go to bed early to get a good rest and a good nights sleep.  And again...had no idea what the events of the night would entail.  Melissa was tossing and turning all night as the contractions were getting stronger and we made the decision to call Jon's mom around 1145 pm that night.  She was camped at the campground nearby in anticipation of the big event.  Now both of us knew that birth was not immediate..but we always like to be prepared.....
So yeah...all was going ok....Baby seemed to be moving along...Jon's Mom was on the way to watch Maddie and all of a sudden Jon heard a subtle beep from the kitchen.  It was our weather radio...severe thunderstorm warning for our area...naturally the TV was turned on and displayed red everywhere..it was crazy....and then the iPad went off...and the phones...with their various alerts....all this time Jon's mom was driving over through the rain and Melissa was contracting in the other room....but Maddie was sleeping soundly..so that was good....well Jon's mom arrived safely through thge downpour and we tried to get a weather update..but the satellite went out....just about the time the sirens came on....cause lo and behold...a tornado warning was issued for our area....and from the radar on the computer...it was pretty hairy outside.
So here we are...its 145 in the morning...we woke Maddie up...she's in a haze...Melissa is contracting and Jon's mom and Jon are hovering over the computer in the basement all waiting for the storm to pass...Melissa gets a kick (now) out of this because we had a bunch of storage boxes on the couch and she (the contracting pregnant lady) moved all of them while all of us gazed at the radar.  Anyway...the storm passed quickly..and we all sort of went to bed...Maddie asked the next morning if she was in the basement..so she clearly was out...and the rest of us slept...sort of....
I correct myself..Melissa didn't sleep..the contractions became more and more intense and uncomfortable right about the time the tornado warnings were issued.  She tried to let us all sleep and kind of hung out in the bathroom.  Right about 445 she called the nurses who pretty much didn't tell her anything..except to come in when she felt like it...when the contractions were about 5 minutes apart....and she stopped counting when they were seven minutes apart.  It should be noted as a side note that this process of laboring at home and timing of contractions was new for everyone since Maddie was born after she was semi-induced when we were well established at the hospital......so after the evening Melissa made the decision we would get into the hospital at about 6am....all of a sudden Jon was tapped and awoke from a semi adrenaline filled sleep to hear Melissa say..."If you want coffee, you better make it now..."  That was all he needed to hear...after some quick instructions to Jon's mom..we were off.....
So we're driving...and making good time...hitting every light...beating the rush hour traffic....unlike last time with Maddie there is no radio or singing...just Melissa lounged back in the passenger seat....but we are noticing downed and damaged trees as we head toward downtown Madison...apparently it was a good decision to hang out in the basement...
So we arrive at St Mary's Hospital downtown Madison...Jon's pumped full of adrenaline and may have been walking a LITTLE too fast for Melissa given she was full blown "I'm going to have a baby soon.." mode....and she was a trooper and lovingly reminded him to "slow the heck down"  We arrived in Triage to which a nurse said "What brings you in today????"   Seriously..I thought ohhhh man....she's going to get it....but Melissa said..."I'm in labor and having contractions 7 minutes apart."  So they hooked her up to a machine and politely told her "protocol."  "I notice that you are having contractions two minutes apart..which means since you say you arent feeling them but every seven minutes this may be early labor...we may send you home after we get you checked out to make sure."  Immediatly the ohhh..mannn thoughts came into Jon's head...and he thought to himself...if you send us home..I'm going to take our butts and park them accross the street at the pier on lake monona and come back in thirty minutes..cause we aren't under any circumstances going back to Sun Prairie!  Melissa was all chill during this...well they checked her out..and SURPRISE she was almost 6cm...yeah....we were admitted...good decision St Mary's :)
So we are walking to the delivery room...the nurse says..."you are really relaxed for being 6cm" to which Melissa says..."what good would screaming do:)"  Gotta love her!!!  :)  We arrive...the next couple hours go really really quickly...see a bunch of doctors and nurses who all congratulate Melissa to tell her she is doing great....and then ask her what her birth plan is...."to get the baby out safely" was our reply....and quickly..cause at this point is is 930am...8cm..and its gametime.....
So then the main event comes....doctors and nurses are in....we're ready to go...and one of the nurses comments "you are still wearing your shoes".....Melissa had on tan work flats...."you may want to take them off...." to which the nurse got a reply/shout.."they were 7$...leave them on...I'm over it..!!!!"  After 6 minutes (true) of pushing our beautiful daughter Morgen Anne Meyer was born happy and healthy....an overjoyed Papa got to cut the cord...and a tired and overjoyed Mama got to hug her second daughter and kiss her forehead....while still sporting those pristine tan flats.....

Mini-Linebacker Move......

Every once in a while I have to include one of these gems...the description doesn't even compare to the moment....

I was in the bathroom about to close the door. She (Madeline) ran past me yelling "I have to go potty; and poop!!" Did a linebacker block against me while simultaneously pulling down her pants....

She tooted....
She totally potty blocked me.....

Attempting to Teach Life's Lessons.....Losing Gracefully.....

The following is an email conversation about Maddie and Papa playing Old Maid...Maddie HATES to lose......

Old maid........
For the first time she was dealt the old maid. Started freaking out but I told her the rules. So she was ok cause there was the possibility I would pick it. And wouldn't you know. I picked the freakin old maid. It came down to two cards. And she didn't pick it back. She had the Schweinert gloat.....;)

Lost again. Lesson averted.....

It's An Appliance Party

Wanna join a cool party?  Its easy to get involved.  You just have to be a homeowner and be able to lift heavy things, coordinate transportation and know a thing or two about taking measurements...this would sum up our involvement in our new pasttime...the appliance party.
You see it all started by the humming in the kitchen...it started out as a humming, then more of a whoosh...then more of a helicopter....and it was our fridge...it is original to the house...but just was gettng loud.  The concern was starting to rise about the reliability of this unit...could it keep stuff cold? would it keep us up at night?...or would it one day become a very large paperweight....
So Melissa and I had talked that before miniature Meyer arrived we would probably have to upgrade to a more reliable unit.  Turns out Jon's parents are remodling their kitchen and then had a two year old fridge that we were able to aquire...so thus addition number one to the appliance party.  With the coordination of Jon's dad we were able to get the unit transported from New Berlin to Sun Prairie...with a few bathroom breaks on the way....:)  Many thanks to Edwin (neighbor) and his muscles for helping us get this thing in the door..and many thanks also to Jon's dad for hooking up the water!!!  Fridge works great!
Oh..but the party is not over....progress is in the works to upgrade the stove to a gas stove and range...turns out Melissa's parents are also remodeling and we may be aquiring their gas stove and range....coordination is in the works for a gas line to be ran in the house to feed the unit...and hopefully with in the next few months we'll be cooking with fire again!!!!
Oh..and on a side note.....we had an awesome experience getting rid of our old fridge..turns out our recycling faciltity doesnt take these types of units anymore..but a quick internet search by Melissa turned up the states Focus on Energy program which basically sent a truck to pickup our fridge..it was awesome..such a hassle free experience......and nice for Jon since even though he is completely buff...he didn't want to move a fridge again......

Spring Is Here = Do Work

The above title is not meant to be a burden; in fact it is actually a welcome change.  It has been a crazy winter and the onset of spring and somewhat nice weather unearths some unknowing motivation to get started and get stuff done!  There is always something to do..and the nice weather just make you want to jump up a little and accomplish something!!!  We sure know that Maddie is ready for spring...ever day she is asking to ride her big girl bike, even early in February when it was hanging in the rafters!  This past month we were able to finally get it down..and start to make the bike rides regular outings.
It was actually really, really nice...Jon came home from work during the day this past week and it was 60 degrees.  We decided to go on a family outing/bikeride to the park.  It was just one of those moments as a family when you sat back and watched Maddie speed off on her bike...walked slowly, breathed the fresh air and we both thought to ourselves...life is good..we are blessed.  Our 45 minute outing was capped off by some time at the park..and then what was really cool was a storm came in and we all got caught in the rain...the last block walk to the house was kind of neat...a welcome warm rain to start the spring season off just right.
Oh yeah..the work part...well, its has been busy.  Of course there are the normal proceedings around the house..the day care, the work schedules and the everyday house happenings...of course we have a number of projects in the works.....mostly construction projects..and the creation of our fourth bedroom into a playroom/bedroom combo to allow the upstairs bedroom to transition back into a nursery:)  This past weekend we had to opportunity to really pound out some progress.  Omi and Opi Schweinert were really awesome to take Maddie for the night while Jon and Melissa did some organization.  Maddie even came back with a special birdhouse project that she made.  It was pretty neat.  We were both impressed.  The weekend was successful and Jon & Melissa even had a chance to go on a cool date.  It was dinner and a movie..but was really a relaxing time.  We even discovered a new (well new to us) chinese restaurant in downtown Sun Prairie.  WE decided that this would become a frequented restaurant; fast, inexpensive and really, really good.  And the Madster would love it also.  The movie we saw was Divergent; which was good...Jon thought the book was better...but what a great time.  We woke up refreshed ready to tackle our project list.  Jon is in the process of making furniture for the downstairs playroom that is a knockoff of pottery barn...and it is turning out pretty nicely.  Melissa is in the process of creating a lego table for the Madster..complete with storage..and also getting all the baby stuff ready...so we really rocked out some progress on these projects.  Many thanks for the Schweinerts for watching Maddie and allowing us some cool time together!!!
